When it comes to creating a truly inviting and comforting living space, personalising your home is key. Adding your unique personality to your home not only creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere but also allows you to express your individuality. I primarily specialise in interior design for period properties which often have lovely, unique features and lend themselves beautifully to being personalised. However, any property can be made to feel special and in this post, we will explore various ways to infuse your personal touch into your home, transforming it into a reflection of your style, interests, and cherished memories.
Identify Your Style
Begin by selecting a design theme that resonates with you. Explore different design styles such as modern, minimalist, traditional, or eclectic. Consider elements like colour palettes, furniture styles, and overall aesthetics and gather images on Pinterest. You’ll soon see whether lean towards a cosy country house feel or a more contemporary mid-century aesthetic.
Select Colours and Patterns
Colours and patterns play a significant role in defining the ambiance of a room. A little understanding of colour psychology and how different hues evoke various emotions is a big help. Choose a colour scheme that aligns with your personality and preferences and experiment with patterns and textures to add visual interest and depth to your space. For this bedroom, the client really wanted a warm and cosy feeling so we added layers of warm colours.
Create Conversation Starters
Infuse your home with unique and eclectic décor pieces that become conversation starters. Vintage and antique fairs, and online marketplaces are great places to look for one-of-a-kind finds. Handcrafted and personalized items, such as artisan pottery and sculptures, add a touch of individuality to your space. I’ve added lots of theses little touches to my kitchen, such as vintage ceramic pieces, that give it character and charm.
Customise Furniture, Cabinets and Accessories
Give your furniture a personal touch through DIY makeovers. Upcycle and repurpose old pieces to breathe new life into them. You could add personal touches with paint and upholstery, transforming a plain chair into a vibrant statement piece. This is an area where you can really let your creativity flow and there is no need to be too precious. I painted my old kitchen India Yellow and added new hardware and a curtain over the washing machine, to totally transform the space.
Curate Your Personal Collections
One of the best ways to personalize your home is by displaying your hobbies and interests. Showcase your collectibles and memorabilia, whether it’s a wall of vintage vinyl records or shelves filled with antique books. Incorporate artwork and photographs that hold special meaning to you, creating a gallery of cherished memories.
Infuse Sentimental Value
Display family heirlooms to add sentimental value to your home. Whether it’s a cherished antique clock or a vintage photograph, find ways to showcase these treasures. You can blend old and new elements, creating a timeless look that pays homage to your family history and feels totally unique to you. My living room is my sanctuary, full of precious memories.
The last thing I would want to do is to create a show home; all style and no personality. I work with you to explore your design style and guide you in identifying the elements that resonate with you the most, personalising your home. It is always a collaboration to make sure that with a little guidance and creativity, your living spaces will be transformed into a haven that exudes your personality. I also love to incorporate your sentimental items, such as family heirlooms or artwork, to create a space that is deeply meaningful for you.

Great ideas Maureen! Those yellow cabinets are so fun!
Thank you so much, Jessie. Yes, the yellow cabinets are really cheerful 💛
So much to read and get inspired about here! You’ve included loads of interesting topics which are easy and quick to absorb. Refreshing content that puts you at the heart of your home. I’ve often felt that my sentimental/family items conflict with what a designer would want to do in my home, so encouraging to hear otherwise!
Thank you so much, Lizzie. I think that’s a really common fear that lots of people have about working with a designer x
